On the weekend of 11.03 - 13.03.2022, 22 Junior Rangers from Thito and Mathiba Primary School came together with their teachers Mr Mbaiwa and Mrs Kagelo, who are responsible for the Junior Rangers at the schools, and five Junior Ranger trainers from FEYS for the third camp in the framework of the project "Biodiversity and Species Conservation".
Like the two previous camps, the camp was set up at the Boteti River - directly opposite Makgadikgadi National Park. Together with the trainers, teachers and three professional Safari Guides Ofentse Legase, Kabelo Kgafela and Isa Satheba, the children went on game drives in the area and learned a lot about the area and the animals living there.
The expert Walona Sehularo from Elephants for Africa also visited the camp again to talk about his educational work with local farmers and the issue of human-wildlife conflict.
The Junior Rangers were thrilled! For all of them it was their first time in the bush and seeing wild animals. After the excursions, back at camp, the children were able to learn more about the wild animals they saw with the help of the booklet on local animals "Mammals around us".
The experience of camping and spending the night directly in nature was exciting for the children. But especially listening to the sounds of the animals at night was very exciting for all Junior Rangers!
To deepen the complex topic of biodiversity with the Junior Rangers, the three Safari Guides will visit the schools again.
The topic of biodiversity will also accompany the Junior Rangers in their educational units in the coming weeks and months.
We would like to thank the trainers, teachers and Safari Guides for their great support!
Our thanks also go to the Schmitz Foundations, which financially supports the project.
